There can be nowhere more important than your home and it is essential that you enjoy spending time there and that it fulfils the practical needs of your family. That enjoyment comes from several factors which together can make the difference between a house that welcomes you home and one that feels cold and uncomfortable.

Flow is what makes a house feel right and it comes from the layout, from having sufficient space to move freely and by linking the design from one room through to the next. Start by considering what the room is used for and whether you can change the function of the rooms to make them flow better. Perhaps moving your dining room so that it is closer to the kitchen or moving your main living area to the back of the house to improve privacy and make the most of your natural light. In this way, by thinking out of the box, you can almost re-invent your existing home. You need to make sure you have enough space, so de-clutter by incorporating enough storage into the scheme and allow space between key design pieces so that they can be seen. Space is invisible but it is so important.

This doesn’t mean that all the rooms have to be the same, but look for linking elements such as one colour for carpets, for ceilings and for woodwork to create a feeling of uniformity. Your living room may have three colours, such as red, green and gold for instance and you could link this with adjoining rooms by using one or more of the colours in differing degrees. The living room may have neutral walls, but in the hallway you could choose to pull out the green of the sofa cushions and use it on the walls. Doorways can act as frames and it can be exciting to use a bold wallpaper or strong colour that can be seen through the doorway of a more neutrally decorated room. Keep the bold elements to areas that you pass through or use occasionally such as hallways and dining rooms, that way they won’t over-face you and you won’t become tired of them.

We recommend using quality furnishing fabrics from icons of design such as Mulberry, Zoffany, Colefax and Fowler to name but a few. Many of their collections are based on archive designs that have been reinvented and brought bang up to date with a fresh colour palette. Don’t be afraid to use bold colour and to add quirky elements to designs with a few spots here and the odd clashing fabric there. Be constantly on the look out for individual pieces whether antique or contemporary and learn to love mixing and matching. Don’t be afraid to try old with new, classic with contemporary; being eclectic really does add interest to a home. If you buy quality pieces they will stand the test of time and prove to be sound investments. Just because an item is classical doesn’t mean that it isn’t cutting edge.
