WALTONS BAR
CUMBRIA

Waltons Bar, Wetheral, Carlisle
Walton's Bar has been thoughtfully reimagined as a warm, inviting gastro pub that celebrates the rich heritage of one of Cumbria's historic coaching inns. Dating back to the early 1800s, the hotel became renowned as a destination for salmon fishing on the River Eden, where visitors would stable their horses before spending long days on the river. Rather than creating a themed interior, our vision was to subtly weave this history into the design, allowing every detail to tell part of the building's story.
The bespoke emerald green bar tiles were selected for their resemblance to the riveted hulls of traditional fishing boats, while the basketweave floor tiles surrounding the bar pay homage to handcrafted fishing baskets. Sculptural Tom Dixon wall lights evoke the delicate oxygen bubbles rising through the water, and decorative divider screens, finished in Arte woven wallcovering, take inspiration from the reeds and rushes that line the riverbank. Intimate booths and secluded dining nooks create welcoming spaces for relaxed dining, while carefully curated styling, including antique boat oars, vintage life rings, historic fish prints and botanical planting, provides a subtle nod to Walton's rich fishing heritage.
The result is a timeless and atmospheric interior that feels authentic to its surroundings, balancing contemporary comfort with historical storytelling. Walton's Bar has been transformed into a destination where guests can enjoy exceptional food and drink while experiencing a beautifully considered interior that respectfully celebrates the history of Wetheral and the River Eden.
